I got a mail yesterday Smarkets will close my account as I'm Belgian and they will no longer allow customers from my geographic location. I presume some other countries will have gotten the same email. I'm allowed to withdraw all my money and the account will remain open for another week to make sure everything goes well. I use them often to lay big markets as the price is the same as at Betfair, but the commission obviously a bit lower.
Anyone know of an alternate way to get an account there (a private agent or something)?

I wonder why they're closing accounts there, not the greatest sign that they're tackling Betfairs monopoly but maybe it's government related.

As I am belgian too. I ve received the same message. To be honest I was not a great fan of Smarkets. I mean in a pure Trading point of view. No cash out, no keep bet (I think it is now possible) and no bot. Those missing tools did not fit with my in play laying horses strategy.
BUT now I have discover arbing, I realise that it could be an issue to deal with if I want to go further in this complete new world.
I have a specific question for you: I guess you can't access UK bookies. So how are you able to stay in tracks with so few available bookies? I can access Unibet, Bwin, Pinnacle, Sbo, marathon, Ladbrokes. I could probably add 1 or 2. But after it will be empty field. It reduce the number of arbs and when i will be blocked I believe it will mean end of story. Do you have tips to share ?
Regards
By the way Hello to everybody. My name is Marc and complete newbie to this. So after digesting all I can from the forum I will, for sure, ask a lot of questions

Hi Marc, all I can say is...be creative. I still only use only my own accounts. Belgium has more bookies than just those you mention, loads of betting shops...and basically we can use the same books Americans use for their offshore betting as well.

I was talking about those bookies because they are those I can register in the Rebelbetting area :-)
I think, at least at the beginning, it's good to use such software, to understand the mechanics of arbing.
Later, for sure, being able identify surebets by myself could be exploited with local bookies as Bet777 for instance. And other books which are not UK resident welcome.
Is it the way you've used to stay in the battlefield ?
Your comment about still using your own account is very interesting because it means that you, probably, are creative but, at this time, not over creative.
Thank you very much
Marc

Re: Smarkets closing accounts from some locations
Amazing how poorly some books handle these local regulation issues. This also sheds light on why so many of them go broke - suboptimal moves are very dangerous. A sportsbook needs sports bettors, and it should act to increase their numbers, not decrease. IMO their correct strategy is to point to their licence, their point of operation, and dispute point of consumption. I can understand excluding us players and the hassles that may come with them, but a small book cutting off small eu countries doesn't make sense to me.

Another hint Marc: Bet777, starcasino and Betfirst = roughly 10betAchille wrote:Dear Alfa,Alfa1234 wrote: Hi Marc, all I can say is...be creative. I still only use only my own accounts. Re: Smarkets closing accounts from some locations
Alfa, I embark those good tips for the future (by the way, ysterday, while I was trying to arb Bwin/Marathon, the odds moves in Bwin, but the odds at Bet777 (I had to identify the market manually of course) were even better than Bwin.Alfa1234 wrote:Another hint Marc: Bet777, starcasino and Betfirst = roughly 10betAchille wrote:Dear Alfa,Alfa1234 wrote: Hi Marc, all I can say is...be creative. Re: Smarkets closing accounts from some locations
I'm from Austria too. Got the same email yesterday. Customer service said they are closing some countries because of legal reasons.
@gamblehappier: Betfair closed about two years ago for Austrian customers.
I might have to start using a betting agent in the future.
