Betfair - Data theft (Sep 2011)

Sat Dec 16, 2017 5:01 pm

Somehow I ended up reading this and I thought it would be interesting to share.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betfair#Data_theft
In September 2011, Betfair admitted that it had concealed the theft of confidential customer data from the company's 2010 share prospectus. The theft included the payment card details of most of its customers, "3.15m account usernames with encrypted security questions", "2.9m usernames with one or more addresses" and "89,744 account usernames with bank account details". The company further stated that it had informed the Serious Organised Crime Agency of the incident which happened on March 14, 2010 but was not discovered by Betfair data security until May 20 of that year.

I would advise everyone to set up 2 factor authorisation.  Easy to do and prevents unauthorised access to your account.

Just to note.
Betfair is big, has public stakeholders, and they were definitely pushed to admit that data theft, even in small letters.
Just imagine what happens with the smaller bookmakers that do not have to make anything public ( they don't have stocks to sell ) and they are also usually worse technically ( less resources etc ).

Careful where you give your data at and what passwords you set.

2FA is indeed a must. And password managers ( I suggest bitwarden )

2 factor authorization is a high security level in order to protect data and passwords.A lot of companies offer it,facebook.google, apple etc..
Log in to your skrill/neteller and enable it in order to be more secure.
When you enable it,except your login password you have created in the past, they will ask you every time to write the password
that they sent you via google authenticate in your mobile.
