Betting rules on abandoned football matches and tennis games

Sun Jan 15, 2023 8:22 am

Over the years, I noticed the frustration and the stress abandoned matches are causing to the bettor. A very general advise would be to avoid placing arbing bets between bookmakers with different Terms and Conditions. No one likes when a postponed match is abandoned or cancelled, especially after they have done much research beforehand in order to fit the right betting strategy.

In theory bets made for cancelled or abandoned events tend to be deemed as void, but there are exceptions based on the type of sport, the type of event, and how the bookie decides to treat the subject.

The rules of abandoned games are a bit more complex especially for the latter, we will exemplify later.

General view of betting rules for abandoned football match

Usually if a game is cancelled before it starts, any bets will be void, there are exceptions if the game is postponed but it really will depend on the time frame. There can be situations where bookies will accept a time frame no greater than 12 hours, 24 hours up to even 72 hours. Most of the bookmakers I know, use the 72h time frame, but this is not universal.

If a match is cancelled or abandoned after kick-off, and the result is decided by the officials the multiple bet for the main result may still stand; but if in in the same conditions, the bettor placed an accumulator, the results which occurred will remain valid and the bet will be recalculated based on them, the other events which are no longer possible will be voided.

There are situations where the match could be forfeited by Team A before the match started, and officials decided that Team B is declared victor, in this case bets will be voided.

General view of betting rules for abandoned tennis matches

Tennis rules are different from any other type of matches and finding a thoroughly inclusive frame is a bit complex but the general rules are the following. For a Walkover win, when a player wins based on the fact that his opponent is a no show, the bets will be voided since the game did not commence.

In case of injury based retirements, and a single bet based on player A or B winning, there can be 3 outcomes based on bookie / betting exchanges rules:

Scenario 1: all bets are valid if at least 1 set is completed, exchanges included.

Scenario 2: bets are only valid if the full match is completed, exchanges excluded.

Scenario 3: bets are valid as soon as the match starts, if player A is disqualified, player B will be deemed winner.

Weather also plays a big role and some bookies will continue to validate your bet even if the match is postponed, but it depends again on the rules of the said bookie. Usually there is a time frame in which the game needs to happen in order for it to remain valid.

In the events of disqualification, usually bets are voided.

Tips

The results are highly dependant on the operator’s rules. Every bookie treats abandonment differently and the only way to get informed about the conditions is by thoroughly reading the T&C’s. We recommend that you do this by default before engaging in any betting activities anyway.

The best thing you can do, is create a list where the compatibility of each bookmaker will be shown depending on what the case is. Then put that list in the wall right above your laptop. But again, you never know when they change their rules and you have to check every now and then. Especially if we talk about Tennis, football and baseball.

What you suggest makes sense and should be followed by the people who have an immense interest in specific markets. But what about the rest who have only 5% of their arbs generated by these markets. I am afraid the time you spent on this will not be paid promptly.
