Do Penalty Shootout Goals Count Towards a Golden Boot?

Sun Jan 15, 2023 6:56 am

The question might sound silly to your ears, but what if you place a bet on a market called, ''Who is going to win the Golden boot?'' (or the Golden shoe). This might also be a long-term bet that will be decided at the end of the season. That means you could wait up to 12 months to get paid.

So the very quick answer would be ''No'', but keep reading if you want to learn something more. If you’re new to the football world or you have not experienced many penalty shootouts, then you may not be sure about what happens.

What Are Penalty Shootout Goals?

In simple terms, these are the goals that players score in a penalty kick shootout. So what is a penalty shootout? Also known as kicks from the penalty mark, a penalty shootout is a proven method of determining the winner of a match that would otherwise end in a tie or draw. It is the thrilling climax of a football game. A penalty shootout always happens at the end of a match when it is difficult to determine the winner after the normal and extra time. It only occurs in games that cannot end in a tie, which are, in most cases, the finals. In a penalty kick shootout, each of the participating teams takes turns shooting the ball from the penalty mark, and the goalkeeper of the opposing team only defends the goal.

In the game of football, for example, each team has five penalty shots that must be taken by different players. The team that collects more goals from the penalty mark is declared the winner. Penalty shootouts finish as soon as one of the teams has an insuperable lead. If the goals are level after the five pairs of shots, the penalty shootout progresses into an extra round. This will continue until the shootout determines the victor of the game.

I have seen the 2008-09 Greek cup final between Olympiakos and AEK, ending in 3-3 in normal time. It went 4-4 in extra time. It finished 15-14 after the penalty shout-out.

The penalty shootout is among the four proven ways of breaking a tie in any competitive match. Extra time, the away goal rule, and the two-legged ties are the other methods approved by the rules of the game when it comes to breaking a draw.

Do Penalty Shootout Goals Count Towards a Golden Boot?

Also known as the European golden shoe, the golden boot is an award presented each season to the top goalscorers in different leagues and competitions across Europe. The trophy is simply a sculpture of a soccer boot. Since its inception in 1967, the golden boot or shoe has been given different names based on the sponsor. Keeping in mind that the golden boot award is only presented to leading goalscorers, do the penalty shoot goals count towards winning it?

The kicks successfully scored during a penalty shoot out don't count as goals for the team scores as well as individual kickers. And they are tallied differently from the goals that penalty taker score during the normal time or extra time if any. This means that the goals scored during the penalty shootout do not count towards the golden boot award.

How Do Penalty Shootouts Work?

In football, penalty shootouts only occur during the knockout stages of a tournament, including the last 16 of all major international competitions such as Euros and World Cup, as well as club contests like the FA, Champions League, and Europa League.

As mentioned earlier, penalty shootouts help to determine the winner of the match by the end of the regulation and extra time. That means only one team is in a position to progress to the next level or be crowned the champion of the tournament.

Are Penalty Shootouts Considered a Draw or Win?

In most cases, a penalty shootout is considered from the original match that it follows. Any single-legged knockout match that needs a penalty shootout in order to determine the result, however, is considered a draw for the two teams, regardless of the shootout winner. Two-legged match fixtures are considered either as two draws or one loss and one win.

If a team is tallying up its number of successive wins without a loss, it might be tempted to include a match that it has won through a shootout. However, that would be the unofficial total. But for official statistical purposes only, the penalty shootouts aren't counted towards a record run.

Are There Injuries, Offenses, and Substitutions During a Penalty Shootout?

During a shootout, there's still a possibility of a kicker getting injured or a team wanting to change a player. However, different rules apply at penalty shootouts than they do for the normal part of the match. This's particularly very crucial concerning the goalkeepers since they're a key part of each penalty kick.

If the goalies get injured or cannot proceed with the penalty shootouts, they can be substituted by another player from their respective teams. But this is only possible if a team has not used its full quota of substitutions during the main game. And once the injured goalies have left the pitch, they cannot participate in that particular match again. These rules are only applicable to goalkeepers.

If other players are injured during the shootout, the teams will be forced to continue without them since they cannot be replaced. Also, players can be send off when they commit serious offenses.

Final Thoughts

Up to this point, you have enough information and knowledge about penalty shootouts and goals that result from them. When you see any match ending in a draw and the winner must be determined, you will be able to know what is going to happen next.

It is now clear that penalty shootout goals do not count towards winning the golden boot reward. Only those scored during the normal playing time count towards a golden boot.

Do you know of any bookmaker offering Golden Boot bets?
I read some comments from Ibrahimovic today and I believe he gave me a very good hint.

I had to find it in Youtube to believe it, and surprise, Ernesto Valverde.

Almost all bookmakers offer these bets in the beginning of the season. For example, Bet365 and Bwin still offer them. But there is a catch. Many bookmakers will withdraw these bets as soon as they close the book with a good profit. Now we are closing the end of the season and that is why you can't bet these markets in most bookmakers.
