Huge corruption investigation in Belgian football

Wed Oct 10, 2018 6:14 pm

Belgium's federal police arrested today Mogi Bayat, a top manager of Belgian football. Bayat has done business in several European countries. 44 raids took part today in Belgium and 13 more in other European countries including France, Luxembourg, Serbia, Cyprus and Montenegro.
Referees, coaches, officials and other prominent figures of Belgian football are being questioned by the police. At least 2 teams had their offices raided, Club Brugge and Anderlecht.
Prosecutors are looking into charges for money laundering, tax evasion and fraud, while rumours are saying that max fixing might be the case also.

The ball got (most likely) rolling after a federal complaint by relegated team Westerlo.  They got relegated due to some highly suspicious results after Moeskron won their last game in a very weird way 2 seasons back.  The same happened last season when KV Mechelen got relegated when Moeskroen scored 4 goals in their last 30mins vs Eupen.  Everybody knew something strange was going on by simply watching those games, accusations were made but no proof was found so far.

The investigators came upon other stuff during this investigation which involved player managers Bayat and Veljkovic.  No details are known but they are likely accused of tax evasion and fraud while transferring players, match fixing by some of the players they manage is in the picture.  Both managers have transferred players for the vast majority of Belgian pro clubs and have clients abroad as well.  Club Bruge coach Ivan Leko is spending the night in jail after being interrogated all day.  Leko was managed by Mogi Bayat as a player.  He is expected to be released tomorrow.  9 pro teams had their offices searched.  Ex Anderlecht manager Herman Van Holsbeeck was also interregated but released late in the day.  2 international Belgian referees were also interrogated but no-one has been charged yet.
