Svenska Spel looking to ban certain markets

Wed Oct 16, 2019 11:21 am

Svenska Spel’s CEO, Patrik Hofbauer, is backing plans to introduce a ban on selected betting markets in Sweden in an attempt to tackle match-fixing in a number of sports.

These plans include a ban on betting markets that can be influenced by a single player in an event, such as corners, penalties, and yellow/red cards. This kind of event is very easy to manipulate because they do not depend on the effort of the entire team, but can be controlled or decided by the actions of a single player.

Hofbauer considers this potential ban as ''a historic victory for the sport and the gaming companies that want to offer games on the terms of the sport'', media reports.

However, it remains to be seen if these plans have any real ground in a fully digitalized world, where potential fixers could look elsewhere to gain advantages. It is our belief that any move towards this direction should be orchestrated on a global level, and not on a national one.
