Exchanges in general

Fri May 20, 2016 2:06 pm

Hi guys i am new in this type of betting and i have some questions about exchanges.
1) Do exchanges like Betfair, Smarkets, Betdaq, Matchbook limit their winning players?
2) Which exchanges are the best in the market now?
I have read some articles that Betfair took some money form accs and some dirty moves from matchbook.

1. Exchanges don't limit customers as they only make money from commission on bets so think of them the same as the sharp bookie in that you can bet with freedom.

2. Betdaq have been treading water for 10 years, lower liquidity, worse prices and higher commission than other exchanges so no future there.

Matchbook have good volume especially on USA sports. They have a bit of a complicated 1% commission system which is 1% per bet or 1.15% from UK so effectively works out to something like 2% in total or 2.30% for UK. If you are a trader or somebody who looks to come in and out of a market a number of times then that commission model isn't likely to work for you but it has its uses.

Betfair is the old stager that was first to explode into the exchange market and still has a monopoly to this day but that is dwindling rapidly with a non-competitive 5% or more base rate, their traders at an all time low in disillusionment with Betfair and looking for an alternative, Betfair seemingly more interested in the Sportsbook and their liquidity and prices are no longer that much better if at all than Smarkets and Matchbook, especially on the major markets where it makes no sense to play with Betfair any more.

Smarkets is the new kid on the block in the exchange market and is increasing market share all the time with their 2% commission rate to all customers, no premium charge and no other products to promote except for the exchange. On major markets, their odds are the same as Betfair and their liquidity is similar if not better than Betfair. Especially in the UK football Smarkets have recently taken over Betfair on some markets but they have a lot of work to do but they are expanding all the time.

Just as an example, current liquidity figures on 1x2 and Correct Score for this weekend's FA Cup Final:

Smarkets: £469k and £169k
Betfair: £373k and £40k
Betdaq: £12k and £11k
Matchbook: doesn't state liquidity but 1x2 market odds are gappy and no odds at all available on the correct score so can't think much has been traded in these markets.

In terms of dodgy practices from the exchanges, there are a few bits and pieces but it generally seems to come up when somebody has mistakenly got matched at 1000 instead of 10 or something like that but if you play it straight with these exchanges, then your money is as safe with these as with any bookie.

So overall, Smarkets are the emerging and rapidly expanding exchange that for a lot of markets is simply the same as Betfair but with much lower commission, Betfair is on the decline and by all accounts most of their markets only really propped up by a 300-500 traders providing liquidity and even they are looking for an alternative and if they did move from Betfair, I think you would see the volume on Betfair collapse, Matchbook is good but only for certain types of exchange customers and certain sports. Betdaq, just forget about them.

Thank you that was helpful but I don´t completly understand Matchbook commissions. It means when I am not from UK i will pay 2% per bet doesn´t matter if i win or loose?

If your bet loses, you will pay 1.15% on your stake (or liability if you made a lay bet).  If you win, you'll pay 1.15% over the profit amount.

This post will be little bit off topic. So RebelBetting for example counts with 1% commition if bet wins but it doesn´t count with commision of loosing bets? It is possible to set it up to counting with all matchbook commisions?

No, the program does not support this. (at least they didn't a year ago, but you can ask them if they managed an update).

I've never used Rebel Betting so I'm not sure if they allow you to change the commission settings but if they do, I would suggest you to change the commission from 1% to 2% (or 2.30% for UK) and then that should calculate your bets more or less correctly. It won't be exactly correct but it would be pretty accurate

Is there any way to find out when Betfair will put a game on the offer?

I have browsed the web searching for this information, without success.

I'm not sure anybody would know exact details for particular games and markets. You are best to ask Betfair directly and they may give you a rundown of when they generally put specific markets up on their site.
