Spanish-Cypriot match-fixing network exposed

Tue Feb 18, 2020 10:41 am

An extensive report published in the Spanish news outfit El Confidencial revealed a Spanish-Cypriot network that corrupted a number of matches during 2017-2018. The network is believed being linked with a well known match-fixing ring in Spain that was recently uncovered. The allegations appear to be focusing on Spanish soccer player Jorge Larena, who played for AEK Larnaca from 2014 to 2019.
Extensive wiretaps linked the Spanish ring with a contact in Cyprus identified to be former Atletico Madrid and Celta player Larena.
The case is linked with an assassination attempt on the retired Serb footballer Darko Kovačević in Athens last month, and a bomb car explosion against a Cypriot referee in Cyprus.
The match-fixing problem seems to be persistent, and authorities have appeared unable to tackle it  effectively over the years.
