High-profile punter Stephen Fletcher, used the betting accounts of his friends, allegedly including two police officers, to gain an advantage against online bookmakers. His own accounts with most online bookmakers had restrictions placed on them, while his account with Bet365 had been closed. The accounts of his friends netted him a total of 330.000 AUD in winnings.
Media reports the case involved a six-year investigation including extensive phone taps which now seems to be a common practice in similar cases.
An Australian court found ''the prosecution had failed to prove that Fletcher had dishonestly obtained a financial advantage by using the accounts to place bets''.
Fletcher's scheme involved a highly organized ''smoke and mirrors'' game with bookmakers, where he would jump from one account to another, to prevent bookmakers from adjusting odds or limiting his bets.
Obviously Fletcher had multidisciplinary support, being at the center of a high volume betting business. The decision of an Australian court should not be considered as precedent for other cases in other countries of the world. We have seen similar cases being convicted in the UK and elsewhere.

How did this case become a legal matter?
The bookmaker, along with refusing to pay out, also got tried to press him with fraud charges?

I had a look at the stories with this gambler and seems to me he is in courts since the mid 00s against various bookmakers. The guy must be the biggest Australian smart bettor and all bookmakers know him very well. The authorities too.freaked wrote: How did this case become a legal matter?

330.000 AUD ? I think they caught only 1% of his friends if he is the biggest Smart Bettor in Australia. This story proves that The LAW does not take terms and conditions of a bookie in consideration as much as many people think.arbusers wrote: The guy must be the biggest Australian smart bettor and all bookmakers know him very well. There was a similar story in Greece 2-3 years ago. Reports back then where not that clear (press wrote that punter used fake/stolen ID's as well). No idea how this story ended.
