Question for Portugal

Wed Jan 11, 2023 5:44 am

Could a Portuguese member of this lovely forum provide a list with all bookmakers accepting clients from Portugal? I am asking for regulated and legal bookmakers.
Also, what is the taxation of gambling (not only betting) winnings in the country?
Muito obrigado.

Hi Campeones!

I am Portuguese, but the market is terrible around here.
PM if you have specific questions, I also have a couple of quick questions for you.

Best,

Why good luck? ahah Is campeones coming to save us? Taxes here are paid by the bookie, therefore sports odds are lower...
Besides that there is no alert service for Portuguese bookies (tracking the lower odds)

Does anyone have a different view? We could learn and grow together

3 obstacles with Portugal:

1. Regulator gives out very few new licences so there are only a handful of operators.

2. Bookies are taxed brutally. They offset this to their odds, which are terrible.

3. Players need to provide a valid Portuguese NIF when they register, which is their national insurance number.

I don't share the same view of the Portuguese market. There is space for doing business. And of course shoot your questions here as I am not accepting PMS.

I m sure I will surprise you, but taxes being paid by the bookmakers (instead of the players) is a very big advantage, not a disadvantage. It is more or less the Greek system where taxes are paid on the counter, or by the bookmaker and not by the client. Quite the opposite from the Spanish system that kills everything.

Thank you very much Francisco for assessing the situation. There is no problem for us to provide NIFs, TINs, whatever they ask for. After all, we are not doing anything illegal.
Yes, the odds are somewhat lower but if you have your niche you also have a time window to exploit bookmakers before they realise what is going on.

We are not locusts and we will not kill the Portuguese market. We never killed any market at all. We are simply looking for some opportunities and the project is on track. Notice that every Portuguese project could have extensions to the holly grail of gambling, Brazil.

Really thank you for all the info and opinions you provide guys.
Saudações a todos os amigos de Portugal (e do Brasil).

I sometimes hear people express that Portugal may be a gateway to Brazil. Maybe I misunderstand, but to me the markets should be viewed as distinct. The only relationship that I can see between the two is that in Portugal there are many Brazilians with NIFs and resident permits that may have friends and family back in Brazil. But as for the operators themselves the licence requirements in Portugal eliminate most similarities at least in the regulated market. Even for operators that exist in both countries, their websites have different odds and TCs.

Large organisations that try to make as much money as possible gambling are called locusts here. But is it possible to make millions from gambling without being a locust? Maybe there is a handful of people in this world who can make big money without large networks of collaborators. But we can't all be geniuses. So does that mean we should be content with mediocre returns followed by early retirement after being banned? We should curb our ambitions for people who refer to us as insects? Every penny earned by a smart gambler results in the operator becoming more efficient and less profitable for other gamblers. So let's not pretend what we are all doing is important work outside the scope of providing for our families and ourselves. I couldn't begrudge you even if your actions did kill a market because it would be entitled and self important of me. Tomorrow in gambling never has been guaranteed to anyone.
