@ Ppintaluba,

I just noticed that you are from Uruguay. That National team is one of the most enjoyable to watch and I wish you great success in WC 2022. :)
I'm really sorry for La AUF's craziness regarding the firing of El Maestro. Óscar Wáshington Tabárez is among the best in my eyes.

What times are we witnessing?
What do you think about the many players in their late 30s and near 40s in prime physical shape who actively compete at the highest level in a given league, often during all games? A long time ago, these older geniuses weren't that many and usually had to be replaced in the game (or appear later in the game).

In past years, soccer lovers enjoyed talented sportsmen for short time than nowadays. For example, Eric Cantona left sometime in his early 30s. Imagine if we witnessed such a talented sportsman 10 years more!

Some of these are here at the WC2022:
Diego Godín, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi, Claudio Bravo Muñoz, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modrić, Kostas Mitroglou, Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez and so on.

I regret that Baggio, Laudrup, Maldini, Friedel, Francescoli, Zanetti, Zidane, Pirlo, Maradona, Romario, Gică Hagi, Caniggia, Batistuta and so on could not benefit from modern fitness science and rehabilitation therapy. Soccer lovers need these heroes again these days, but they're absent.

The physical condition of the players changed a lot for the past 10/20 years. Even the average peak performance years increased, and many players could handle their peak after 33yrs. Like Benzema and Kroos.

But about your other example, I believe stars players like Suarez, are just here because of their influence and experience, not mainly because they are still top players. Maybe there is no better alternative.

Hi Probettor91,

How can I forget to mention Benzema and Kroos! You are absolutely right. Thank you.

As for Luis Suárez, my opinion is a bit in contrast to yours. Why? I recently watched his matches with Nacional de Montevideo. Several top-notch European teams want him now. But I could be wrong. This is just an opinion. I appreciate your opinion too! :)

Not so long ago Carlo Mazzone did an excellent experiment. As Allenatore at Brescia Calcio, he put his full trust in old stars Pep Guardiola and Roberto Baggio at a time when most of them were discriminated against because of their age. Not to mention those who play the full 90 minutes when their condition allows! Do you remember Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth (FA Cup Winner) and the reincarnation of David James? Bolton Wanderers under Sam Allardyce is another successful experiment, tracing the paths we now regularly enjoy the 30-plus-year-old geniuses.

I wish you many profits. :)

Addendum.

Keep in mind that Brescia's main goal was to avoid relegation.

Also, have you noticed some of the roots of Guardiola's modern tactical approach? Cruyff's influence is undeniable, but Mazzone's way of thinking has also shaped some of Guardiola's approaches. Ever wondered why Man City, as the favorite, once started with 5 defenders against the PSG team?

Matured players is not only a football phenomenon. Look at LeBron James (and the rest of the LA Lakers team). The same applies to american football, even water polo. In the 80s, a footballer at the age of 29 was considered a veteran, at the age of 30 ready to retire, and at the age of 32 already retired, or playing in US teams as a side income. Only some goalkeepers would go to the age of 38-39 still playing under the goalposts. Fast forward to today, 29-34 years of age is the most productive period for a footballer. Need to speak about CR7?

On the other hand, I am 100% sure, some of these players, for example LeBron, are still considered for advertisement reasons and sponsorships. LeBron is a damage for LA Lakers and not a profit sportsmanlike. But how about UA contracts?

Completely agree. Even in the Miami Heat, LeBron tried to reject their godfather Spoelstra.

All my sympathies to Switzerland, but after the departure of Vladimir Petković, they are not the same team.

After South Korea's rise after the Guus Hiddink era and after their win against Germany at WC2018, this team has attracted a lot of attention. The Uruguay team still benefits from specific things, relatively unchanged after Tabárez, let's see what happens.
