Rare coins investing

Fri Oct 28, 2022 7:49 pm

There is a frenzy in investing circles for art pieces as a hedge against inflation. Analysis shows that indeed fine art collector's pieces outperformed the SP500 for the last 20 years. I have a very close friend who is a master in observation. This is a trait we should all cultivate to our children and I m doing my best to teach my relatives and close friends this trait. This friend taught me how to pay attention to things that pass from my hands, including coins. So I started collecting only 2 euro coins that I could simply receive as changes when paying cash for anything you could imagine. I also try to pay with the amount that would force cashiers to give me back 2 or 4 euros as changes.

The results are astonishing. Very recently I received a 2 euro coin that costs 11 euros in eBay and I can't believe how ignorant some people might be. They really don't pay attention and they don't care. This is a random process actually, I pay for anything with cash, and some times I receive changes that already pay for what I bought. It resembles to value betting some times.

After counting how much I made within a year, I decided to expand to 1 euro and 50 cents euro coins. I became an expert, and I can identify value within seconds. These coins are also beating inflation if kept in the long run. It is my understanding that more and more people will start collecting rare euro coins and I am telling you it pays back with absolutely little or no effort. This could become addictive at a point.

This is received as changes in a Lithuanian super market. It comes from Luxembourg.

Artwork shows strong appreciation during times of high inflation. I bought a Van Gogh painting for $70m USD 2 years ago and have had it recently valued at $88m USD. Art is a great investment and it also a great way to diversify a portfolio.

The only Van Gogh meeting what you say should be the ''Wooden Cabins among the Olive Trees and Cypresses'', but that was sold 1 year ago, not 2.

What is the maximum mintage of every coin that you are looking for? Because the mintage decides the value in the end. Is there any other criteria?

Mintage played a role, but not the only role.
For example, you have a Greek 2 euro coin with a mintage of 1.000.000, but it is afflicted from circulation and doesn't look healthy. And at the same time you have a fine Spanish coin of 4.000.000 mintage, shining in the sun. I would collect both, but would be happier with the Spanish.
Smaller countries, always better than bigger countries.
Smaller mintage, always better than bigger.
Coloured, always better than not coloured coins.
etc etc etc.

You dont have to be an expert now. Just collect them, and when the time comes you will know what is more valuable.

It is with great satisfaction to see a coin collection topic starting in the forum. I started collecting post stamps as a teenager and moved to coins five years ago.

Recently I visited Rome. One of the great historic Metropolis' of our world, a city we should all visit. I also visited Vatican which is enclaved within Italy. Vatican is the smallest country that adopted the Euro and it has the right to circulate its own Euro coins. Vatican Euro coins are rare and are considered to be valuable.

So I grabbed the chance to visit the Vatican postal office just to buy whatever collection I could. I stayed humble and didn't buy those extra collections with 5 euro coins, but I bought the 2018 collection of 8 coins that you can see in the following image:

The cost was just 37 euros and I decided to pay with a corporate card in order to reduce the real price even more. When I came home I found all collections of Vatican coins and they offer a much better than inflation performance. I regret I didn't buy more.
This collection can be found at the price of 55 euros online, so you can understand that I am already a winner. At the same time, I m practising my patience, because this is a game of patience.

If you have that trait, next time you visit Rome, pay a visit to Vatican too. You could get the 2018 and 2022 collections at the minimum price you could ever find them. These are the only collections they sell right now. And at the same time you will be astonished with the museums and the art exposed there, full of Judeo-Greco-Roman civilization.

This is my latest acquisition from the Vatican city. It is the first collection of euro coins for the year 2002. These are Brilliant Uncirculated coins.

It is priced at 400 euros today, and my study shows it will beat the inflation in the long run. It already does. There are only 65.000 pieces of this in circulation. The vast majority belongs to collectors, some of them are already lost. I specifically targeted Euro collections from the Vatican City because of their characteristics.
